Outpatient Treatment for Addiction

At Absolute Awakenings, we believe that each outpatient treatment program must be tailored to the individual’s unique needs. There is no “one size fits all” approach to recovery.

Outpatient Treatment Programs for Addiction Recovery

An outpatient treatment program is the most flexible treatment option for those that require addiction recovery. Drug and alcohol treatment resources are available to the recovering individual without the need to reside at the treatment facility.

Scheduled sessions take place weekly on a consistent schedule.

This is ideal for patients who have a stable at-home environment or those looking for a step-down form of treatment.

No matter the struggle, there is always a solution. From pain comes immense growth and valuable lessons. Our goal is to set you up for a long-lasting sober, and fulfilling life long after treatment ends.

We’ll be there to support you from the beginning through the end. We encourage you to reach out to our addiction specialists for further information regarding outpatient treatment programs[1] for addiction recovery.

A More In-Depth Look: What is an Outpatient Treatment Program?

Some individuals in need of treatment may stray away from seeking health care because they feel like they do not have the time for treatment. That’s when outpatient treatment programs can be a great resource in addiction recovery. Outpatient treatment programs work with the patient’s needs and specific schedule.

For example, you may have obligations to attend to, such as being at work or taking care of a child at home. Naturally, you don’t want to neglect those types of responsibilities. Thus, you can end up feeling like treatment just isn’t an option.

We’re here to assure you that there is always a way to make the treatment work. Living with a painful disease such as addiction doesn’t need to be your or a loved one’s reality anymore. There are many intensive outpatient treatment options to conquer addiction that will work with your current schedule.

Outpatient programs can differ in the commitment required, from one session a week to several sessions a day, 5 days a week. After a thorough consultation and evaluation, we’ll create a unique structure that suits your recovery needs best.

The recovering individual needs to have a stable environment at home even if they’re only traveling to the facility for day treatment. If the individual doesn’t have the best situation at home, then they must develop the diligence to preserve despite the circumstances. Fortunately, outpatient treatment programs provide a valuable support network for patients.

This support is found in multiple support groups, individual behavioral therapy, recovery meetings, and caring staff dedicated to guiding you through the journey. One of the main benefits of an outpatient treatment program is that the patient will be able to practice what they learned in their sessions right away.

They have the opportunity to grow and learn how to be accountable for their actions. Although this may seem challenging, it can have enormous benefits in addiction recovery.

How Do Outpatient Programs Differ from Inpatient Rehabilitation Treatment Programs?

The main differentiating factor between an inpatient and outpatient treatment program is how long a patient must remain at the recovery center. Residential treatment requires overnight hospitalization. There is 24/7 support and care offered. The patient will develop a daily routine at the facility throughout the entire duration of treatment.

Recovering individuals in outpatient treatment travel to the facility. There is no requirement put into place where they must stay overnight. Certain resources of the recovery center, such as daily nutritional meals and rigorous treatment, are reserved for inpatient rehabilitation.

What Candidate is Best Suited for an Outpatient Program?

Outpatient treatment can benefit a variety of different people. Each individual is unique, so we encourage you to reach out to our caring staff to get a better idea of what form of treatment will work most effectively. However, there are certain types of people that generally benefit from outpatient treatment the most.

You may be one of those people if:

  • You know you need help but haven’t reached the point of severe addiction. There’s a misconception that rehab is for those that are deep in addiction. Outpatient treatment can be significantly helpful for a person that wants to prevent the need for inpatient rehabilitation.
  • You have a strong support system at home. Residential drug treatment can be especially beneficial for those in need of 24/7 support and who lack a solid support system at home. In other cases, you may have an encouraging network of loved ones, such as friends and family members.
  • You learn most effectively by consistently applying and practicing new skills. Outpatient treatment is structured in a way that allows recovering individuals to apply the lessons they’ve learned immediately. These lessons include coping mechanisms to manage drug use cravings, avoiding triggers, and developing healthy patterns of behavior and thinking.
  • You’re the parent of young children. If you have a child to take care of, residential treatment may not be a realistic option. Perhaps no one can care for your child while you participate in inpatient rehabilitation. In that case, outpatient care provides parents with an opportunity to get better while still attending to their at-home duties.
  • You have obligations regarding your career. You may have demanding responsibilities at work that you can’t miss or take a break from. Outpatient treatment allows you to maintain privacy and make room for treatment after work or on weekends.
  • You require cost-effective treatment. Outpatient treatment is the most cost-effective option. If you’re worried about financing residential treatment, outpatient treatment can save you some financial stress.
  • You need a step-down program after completing a more intensive level of care. Outpatient treatment serves as a great way to transition into daily life after completing residential treatment. After spending significant time at a recovery center, it’s crucial to have a plan in place to prevent relapse. Outpatient treatment can provide you with many of the same drug and alcohol treatment resources. However, these programs will offer more flexibility.

What to Expect in an Outpatient Treatment Program

Each patient’s outpatient treatment program will be tailored to their specific needs. The exact scheduling of treatment sessions will also depend on the recovering individual’s circumstances

However, there are core components of treatment that all outpatient treatment programs should include.

Kindly see below for the components of outpatient treatment that you can expect

Screening and Intake

The screening process serves as a thorough review of each patient’s situation. The screening process is a crucial part of treatment that allows us to formulate an effective plan. This process will cover topics such as:

  • Past and present patterns of substance abuse
  • Physical condition
  • Psychological function
  • Outside support/resources
  • Previous treatment efforts (if any)
  • Willingness to participate in treatment

Assessment

An assessment will allow us to develop a unique treatment plan that suits your needs best. We’ll go over treatment goals and different aspects regarding the structure of outpatient treatment. An assessment can go hand in hand with the intake process, as both require an evaluation of the patient.

Orientation

During orientation, our professionally trained and caring counselors will explain to you the different parts of an outpatient treatment program. This included the general structure and goals of the program, specific rules, the hours during which outpatient services are available, treatment costs, as well as other important details. We’ll show you around the recovery center and help you familiarize yourself with everything that you need to know.

Treatment Services

The support network that outpatient treatment provides is one of the focal points of treatment. Evidence-based therapies also play a huge role in the recovery journey. Core services provided in an outpatient treatment program generally include:

  • Case management
  • Community-based support groups
  • Family involvement and group counseling
  • Individual therapy
  • Monitoring substance use treatment
  • Vocational training and employment services

Continuum Care Planning

This is generally the last part of outpatient treatment. Together we’ll form a relapse prevention plan with the many aftercare resources available. This may mean attending recovery meetings every week or moving forward toward another form of treatment. We’ll assess where you’re at after completing the outpatient treatment and work from there.

Outpatient Treatment Program FAQs

What is an outpatient treatment program?

An outpatient treatment program is a type of rehabilitation program that does not require patients to stay in a facility overnight. Instead, patients attend therapy, counseling, and other services during the day and return home at night.

Outpatient programs serve as an effective route for people who cannot take an extended break from their personal or professional commitments. It enables individuals to fulfill responsibilities outside of treatment hours while receiving the same quality of medical care.

Who is a good candidate for outpatient treatment?

Outpatient treatment can be a good option for people who are dealing with mild to moderate substance abuse or mental health issues. However, the individuals must be motivated to participate in treatment and possess the willpower to avoid relapse.

As part of the admission process, the outpatient staff may conduct an assessment to check if the candidate meets the program requirements. The assessment will also identify any co-occurring disorders or underlying medical conditions.

How long does outpatient treatment last?

The length of outpatient treatment depends on several factors, including the substance use disorder or mental health issue, the severity of the illness, and individual needs. Some programs may last only a few weeks, while others may last several months.

Many outpatient programs are structured to offer flexible primary care. Patients can attend substance abuse treatment for more extended periods on specific days or choose partial hospitalization, which creates an intermediate step between residential and outpatient treatment.

What types of therapy are offered in outpatient treatment?

Outpatient treatment programs typically offer a range of therapies. Group therapy is an essential component of many outpatient programs since it provides opportunities for patients to share experiences and receive feedback from peers. Other common therapies include individual therapy, family therapy, and couples therapy.

There are other treatments, such as art therapy or music therapy, that may also be available. Patients can speak to their therapist or medical practitioner about incorporating specific types of therapy into their customizable treatment plans.

Does insurance cover outpatient treatment?

Many insurance plans cover outpatient treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues. The treatment programs will charge different amounts for their services, depending on the type of therapy and the duration of the treatment. Insurance providers typically have their lists of in-network providers offering outpatient coverage.

While some people may have different insurance policies covering different amounts for outpatient treatment, it is necessary to speak to the health insurance company about the coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses before enrolling in the program.

How Treatment at a Recovery Center Can Change Your Life

There are many benefits that an outpatient treatment program at a rehabilitation center can offer. Taking that first step towards treatment is a courageous sign of strength. No matter who you are, you’ll find yourself in situations you didn’t intend to be in. Pain and obstacles are an inevitable part of life. Allow us to tell you why that’s an incredibly positive thing… Pain makes us stronger and more empathetic people.

Obstacles present us with an opportunity to come out as better people. However, you must make that first choice and be willing to put in the effort. We can’t emphasize enough that you’re not alone in this struggle. Outpatient treatment can open you to the potential you’ve always had. The benefits of enrolling in rehab include, but are not limited to:

1.

Breaking the toxic cycle of addiction. Addiction is a mental disease just as much as it is a physical one. Addressing any underlying mental concerns, such as depression and anxiety, is crucial. To recover from addiction, one must become aware of their tendencies. Outpatient treatment at rehab allows patients to break their old ways of thinking and replace them with much healthier habits.

2.

Addressing and working through underlying issues. When it comes to working through the area of addiction, it helps to envision an onion and all its layers. You peel back one layer and find that there are many more behind it. Human beings are similar. Oftentimes, there are underlying emotional and mental roots behind our actions.

3.

Implementing healthy habits and new behavioral patterns. Those suffering from addiction often struggle with self-care and toxic behavioral health patterns. Fortunately, rehab addresses all kinds of problematic behavior. A critical part of self-care for a person in the  recovery process is setting and accomplishing goals.

Addiction may start as a way to cope with stress, or perhaps it began because the individual felt like they couldn’t feel happy otherwise. Each person’s reasoning differs because of their specific circumstances. Outpatient treatment[3] allows recovering individuals to work through and find solutions to these issues through evidence-based therapy methods.

Our trained care providers will walk you through all the ways you can address matters that cause you unease without turning to drugs or alcohol use. Sobriety opens up the opportunity to find fulfillment in new experiences. You’ll find a newfound joy in your daily life. We would be honored to be the ones to help you see your potential.
